"Hey Spenc," Merill smiled as she attempted to hand the money to the man behind the counter.
"No way. I’m paying this time," the man said, taking some money out of his own pocket and putting it into the cash register.
"But Spencer-" Merill started to say.
"Besides, you caught me just in time for my break, so that means this is basically a date… and everyone knows the guy pays for the first date," Spencer said, writing down Merill’s order on her cup. He didn’t notice the small smile that crept across her face and the way she blushed slightly.
"The usual I’m guessing?" he said, already done writing it down.
"Yeah," Merill said, smiling wider. She always loved the fact that Spencer knew her coffee order.
"Okay!" Spencer said, and then called over his shoulder, "Hey Max, I’m taking my break now!"
His words were greeted with a grunt and Merill and Spencer both laughed.
"Hi Max!" Merill yelled cheerfully. The reply was another grunt from the storeroom. Max appeared a second later, carrying a stack of empty coffee cups piled precariously on top of each other.
"Hey Merill," Max said, pushing Spencer away so he could ring up the next person, "Spenc, if you’re going to go flirt, do it on your break, not with a line halfway out the door," he said, gesturing to the people who were waiting to buy their drinks. Spencer and Merill both blushed and glanced shyly at each other.
"I’ll go wait for my coffee," Merill said quietly, moving over to the place where she would pick it up.
"Dude…" Max said the second she was out of earshot, "Can you please ask her out already?"
"I’m working on it. I’m working on it!" Spencer muttered distractedly, looking at Merill.
"Well at least make her coffee… don’t keep her waiting!" Max said, and then turned around, "Hi, what would you like to order?" he said, his exasperated voice replaced by his cheery work one.
"Here you are," Spencer said, handing Merill her coffee.
"Thanks," she smiled at him, before frowning as she noticed the writing, "What’s…oh…oh."
"It’s true," Spencer said, his elbows leaning on the counter of the coffee shop. Merill set the drink down on the table and looked at him.
"You mean that?" she whispered.
"Every word of it," he said, moving his face closer to hers, "Do you want to go out with me, Merill?"
"Yes," Merill breathed, and both of them leaned across the counter at the same time. The kiss was only mere seconds before Max’s voice jolted Spencer back to his senses.
"You might want to take advantage of your break and go somewhere else with that. I’m not giving you extra time, sorry," he said, proceeding to shove Spencer through the raisable countertop and into Merill’s arms.
"Hey," he said, grinning at her.
"Hi," she grinned back.
"You want to go outside?" he put one hand up and tangled it in her hair. Merill nodded. As the two of them walked out the door-"TEN MINUTES"-Spencer took her hand.
